                                Ragi halwa

Ragi is well known for its rich calcium content. This is even given as first cereal food for babies due to its high nutritional benefits. Ragi is rich in calcium, protein and iron. I have tried several tricks to make my 2 years old son to eat ragi. Making kids love the food has taken the top priority. He doesnt like sweets so I prepared this porridge with salt .That also he rejected.

Finally I tried halwa and both dad and son finished it soon. Really I wonder how my kid finished a sweet item without forcing being forced to eat! For babies and toddlers, it is a really healthy food.Jaggery was not available at home, so I prepared it with sugar. And I didn't try to give it a normal halwa's shape(scared that my son may reject.) Next time I will update the pics with fine colour and shape!


Ragi powder:1 tblspn
Dry fruit powder:2 tblspn
Cardamom/elakka powder:1/4 tspn
Sugar:1 tblspn(As required)
Milk(full cream):1 cup

For dry fruit powder:

Cashew nuts:100gm
Peanuts:100 gm


  • Make coarse powder of dry fruits (For babies it is better to make a fine powder).
  • Mix both ragi powder and dry fruit powder.
  • Add milk and keep it on a low flame.
  • Stir it continuously and once it starts boiling, add sugar.
  • Stir it well till you get the required consistency.
  • For babies, a little bit runny halwa is better .For toddlers, a little bit tight consistency is best(they would love to chew)
  • Add cardamom powder and switch off the flame.
PS: Jaggery will give more colour to the halwa and it is good for the kids too.
